With my chopper booking getting screwed up I had an extra day in Esbjerg. After a day of lying on the bed watching M.A.S.H as the rain blootered my window, the sun eventually cracked the sky. A game tonight? I wondered. A quick glance at the DBU website and I noticed an all city affair. Would it be on or not was the question though. After a swift pint in Little London and grabbing what to be my penultimate bag of cans (contract up at the end of this trip) I made the half an hour walk from the centre to Ventofle. My worries of wasting said walk were soon put at ease when I saw two teams warming up on the 3G part of the sports park. A wee look at the badge of the nearest team confirmed I was in the right place, complete with filthy shoes. I am sure if the game was on grass it would have been off as the two I crossed were a quagmire.

A Tuborg cracked and the pre-match handshakes out the way, the game was go. Bloody hell the standard was atrocious. The players couldn’t trap a ball, they couldn’t shoot and some of the misses were of the worst I had seen. Basically it looked like they couldn’t play football. There were a couple of good players on show in Danny Ly(BK) and Mohammed Jafar (Øst) but they couldn’t carry their teams. After half an hour I was wondering if staying on my bed watching M.A.S.H would have been better than this. But the game flipped. the 33rd minute saw the first goal when Øst’s Hjalte Norbaek went on a jungle run from the halfway line on the right leaving BK-06 players in his wake and as he got cut into the box he struck across the keeper brilliantly. Where did that piece of individual brilliance come from. Øst went on to spurn two big chances immediately before scoring the best goal I have seen this season. It was as aesthetically pleasing as it was tuneful on my ears. Step up Jakob Moller who duly did, this when he stepped on to a poor clearance and with one touch from 40 yards, scudded an effort in off the bar which made a delightful ping as it kissed the crossbar with the ball crashing down into the goal. This with the added beauty of it not touching the net at any point. Superb stuff. Then came a quick fire 3rd. A nothing ball in from the right looked to be a waste, but with his back to goal Mathias Bertelsen managed to salvage it with an unexpected back heel which trickled past Ajdinovic in the BK-06 goal. From thinking this was heading to the worst game of season I had witnessed three goal of the season contenders in six minutes. Then it was BK-06 who were to get in on the match action as they brought it back to 2 v 3 before the half was up. The first coming through Aleksander Kristensen who tapped a Danny Ly ball into an empty net from a couple of yards. The second was a pitch length long ball which the home sides best player Ly ran through onto and slipped past Mortensen in the Øst goal. An incredible turn around in a game . From wishing I hadn’t bothered to a 5 goal thriller with three cracking goals in a 12 minute period

HT 2 v 3

If one forty yarder wasn’t enough for this game, then why not two. This time it was off the foot of the Øst playmaker Mohammed Jaafar who gently caressed the ball up and over the BK-06 defence and keeper. It was made to look so easy. But straight from centre BK-06 forced their way up the park and Danny Ly seemed to miss hit an effort. It was powerful but should not have troubled Mortensen, but the effort seemed to go through the keeper. 3 v 4 in a game half an hour prior was 0 v 0. Ten minutes later Øst restored their two goal lead when a long punt fro Mortensen found Eric Nielsen who cut in and curled one across the goal and into the bottom corner. BK-06 were not to give up though and soon chopped the lead down to a solitary goal again. We had been given 4 worldies, now it was time for a good old fashioned toe bash. This coming from 10 yards of the end of Kristensen’s phalanx for his brace. 4 v 5 and I now couldn’t be more happy that I made the effort to take this game on. Then the only nasty piece of play when Øst’s Jakob Brink wiped out his man from behind earning a booking. But it really wasn’t that type of game. The goals were not finished and neither was Jaafar who walloped an effort from distance into the top corner with the last kick of the game.

From fearing the worst to witnessing one of the most entertaining games this season( Formartine United v Threave Rovers still the best). I would never have guessed at half an hour. With the black clouds forming I hopped in a taxi back to the hotel to save a soaking. Then decided on getting a kebab before setting back down with the best TV programme of all time and it wasn’t even half 8. A great evening in the end. Potentially the last as a worker in Denmark, but there may just be one more yet.
