Random Fact – As shown above, the club won the league in its first 10 seasons of existence
A huge game in Kincorth Circle tonight where only one result would make the locals happy. Cowie on the other hand had a bit of leeway and with a draw or a win could win the league. If the former was to happen and the three points stayed put then it would take KC level on points with the Stonehaven side and crucially level on games won. This being the deciding factor and not the usual goal difference. This would lead to a neutral playoff between the two. Surely tonight would see a decent battle and a bumper crowd.
Pre-game there was a meet up with an old pal Carver at the Abbott (or Covies as locally known). A boozer I had never set foot in previously. A catch up and a gifting of a Sunnybank FC book over a pint followed by some tales from former Kincorth player and legend Norman Gray who talked of playing every night for a week to win a title and five hour pre-season training sessions. It was magic to hear about. There was even a blether with Luthermuir FC legend Murdo Anderson who was taking on the game. Then it was time for the short walk to the game. Big crowd predictions were correct with cars parked on the grass, every side street rammed with cars and the pitch surrounded and even four or five deep at points. I was actually feeling a bit excited as kick off approached. I may have been over doing it though as once the game kicked off in the plume of pyro smoke from the Cowie Thistle fans it was soon clear that this game was not going to be huge on entertainment. There was an early save for Cowie keeper Miller who was quick off his line to narrow the angles, then came a header wide from McAllister for KC. Cowie had an effort which I think hit the woodwork but barring these three chances, the game was devoid of…..well anything at all really. There was a lack of ideas, bite and football being played. Kincorth were playing far too many long high balls all of which were finding Cowies man mountain of a centre half Martin Crisp’s head. Why would you persist in pinging balls at one of the biggest players in the whole Aberdeenshire Amateur set up. While at the other end Cowie did not take much to the table. A very poor half of football. One which would have suited Cowie though.

Surely this game had to get better. Early doors both sides hit the bar which was a good start, but I couldnt help feel the game needed a big booming challenge to get temperatures raised, but it was all too nice if you ask me. Ifi passed up a glorious chance for Kincorth when he looked to have misjudged his jump to header a corner, it looked like he was almost beyond the ball as he made contact, sending it over . Despite this Cowie did look the better of the two sides and got numerous balls into the box only to see nobody taking that gamble. Then with 20 minutes to go things started to heat up as the temperature in the air dropped significantly. It had turned really bloody cold due to the wind. I had my hood up to keep warm, its June nae January . I digress though, and on the park a few challenges across the pitch were punished but one out on the Kincorth right was to be significant. This because Leask stepped up to take the kick and in turn struck the ball from easily 35 yards into the top corner beyond Miller. The ball seemed to hang in the air without dipping. Wind assisted maybe but KC were not giving a shit. They just needed to hold on. Then the moment of the match. A corner for Cowie bounced about in the box leaving Kincorth man Cronin to break wide, I followed the ball out of the box but inside there was a flash point between KC keeper Barney and Thistle man Crisp. I didnt see it but I did see the referee point to the spot. I was reliably informed by those around me that it was a stick on red for a stamp. Disaster for Kincorth made even worse by the follow up long walk for outgoing keeper Barney. With no sub keeper, outfielder Cronin took on the gloves. At this point I have to say, I love stories that are away from whats normal in the game. An outfielder in goal saving a penalty definitely fits that. Alan Oldroyd hit the pen, Cronin dived left but as the ball went down the middle he lifted his leg to deflect the ball over the bar. A quality save from the makeshift keeper. One which I suspect was actually a foul as he seemed a good bit off his line before “Badger” struck it. As he got to his feet he was mobbed by the young KC fans behind the goal. I really felt with ten minutes to go the visitors would score but it was not for the lack of trying they didnt. Some last ditch defending from Ifi and some smart goalkeeping from Cronin ensured the playoff is on. What a finish to a league this has become. Roll on the new final day
A bit of a poor game but thats not what matters in Kincorth tonight, a great run of results got them right back into contention and from a totally selfish point of view I wanted them to win as I really wanted a playoff. It wont be this weekend though as KC have cup comitments. As said, poor game but a new pub, a new book and an outfielder saving a pen. Not to shabby a night barring freezing my bollocks off
