Part two of a Friday night lights double header, although the lights at Kingsford weren’t on long. After a brief stop at the glorious tribute to Denis Law at Great Northern Road/Printfield Walk, we were off to the edge of the city boundary to take in some Junior action while munching down on some of the best sausage rolls in the land. This after entering the darkest place in the city. The under pass of the A947, so dark in the middle it disorientates you. I am sure I have mentioned this before when at a night time game in Dyce. It truly is a weird feeling
Inside IMP there was not a breath of wind and it was actually a lovely night for a game, while an hour previously a few miles away we were freezing our asses off. Fitba wise two of the best teams in the league were doing battle and not for the first time on a Friday night. With a first defeat coming for Hermes last week v fellow title challengers Culter there is not much margin for error now with Culter still unbeaten. I expected tight game tonight but I think it was even tighter than I imagined it would be. Hermes started the game well a couple of chances, including the bar being skelped. The Dyce goal was leading a charmed life by the looks. Eventually the ball found its way in when Dyce keeper Morgan Cook got everything wrong and seemed to misjudge a cross. It was hard to tell exactly what happened but it was clear it shouldn’t have. I am sure Hermes man Cheyne will claim it but I would say own goal. Hermes couldn’t care though and continued their business trying to add to their lead. This saw more chances with a goal line clearance and the crossbar coming to Dyce’s rescue.
HT 0 v 1
Half time saw a decent kick about. If you know IMP there is a wee training bitty behind the far goal. In here there is a set of goals. I suggested a crossbar challenge type game but Wee Man thought the ball might go over the fence. So he opted for a post challenge. If he hit the post once he hit it 10 times. It was quite incredible. The second half saw a better Dyce. They were unlucky not to equalise early doors when Hermes keeper Otto was caught under the ball at a corner but nobody could take advantage. The half was as tight as a dolphins butt and one thing that was clear was the Hermes defence was very sound at their job. Really solid preventing what seemed a rejuvenated home side. Not that there was a lot of chances in the second half or the game in general. I am sure there were more blue lights flashing in the distance on the nearby A947 and A90 than chances (there was a hell of an amount over the course of the game). Another point of note was the refs reluctance to go for his cards. He did have it out but he let the game go a good bit and was sensible. So fair play to him. The second half was a show in how to defend by Hermes and that is what won them their points. Pretty much impregnable throughout. Wee Man was also praising them saying he would like to play in goal behind them. A tight game as expected, a magic sausage roll as expected and an unexpected random chat with Bruce Walker, author of “Pitches and Pies”, a book which I actually reviewed for a magazine in the past. A decent night under the lights one which is a bonus as I should be offshore if not for people not doing their job properly. Maybe not a huge amount of action but still a decent enough game. However, I think I am a bit of a Jonah for Dyce. It has been years since I have seen them win at home.
